China GT to Feature Dedicated Porsche GT3 Cup Class in 2018
New ‘Porsche GT3 Cup Trophy China presented by China GT’ class includes independent regulations and prize money
In 2018, China GT enters its third season amid growing enthusiasm from Porsche customers. In a bid to showcase the full potential of the German marque, and to create a level playing field for Porsche aficionados, this season’s championship features a new class for Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entries entitled the ‘Porsche GT3 Cup Trophy China presented by China GT’, in collaboration with Porsche China. Entries in this class will be eligible for a total prize fund of RMB 800,000.
Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entries, including both Type 991 and Type 997, will be able to compete for the outright Porsche GT3 Cup Trophy China class title, and enjoy exclusive podium ceremonies, classification and prize money in the new season. As in 2017, Cup Trophy China contenders will share a grid with the GTC class.
The Porsche GT3 Cup Trophy China class will fully adopt the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia technical regulations with optional paddle shift and ABS installation. However, unlike in 2017, this year will see the Porsche GT3 Cup Trophy China become independent, and is not required to adopt the GTC Balance of Performance (BoP). A 911 GT3 Cup entry can still choose to compete in the GTC class, but must opt out of the Porsche GT3 Cup Trophy China class and comply with the BoP mandated for the GTC class.
Financially speaking, the Porsche GT3 Cup Trophy China class features a total purse of RMB 800,000. One quarter of this will to go the top three teams in the overall Porsche teams’ classification, who will take home RMB 100,000, RMB 60,000 and RMB 40,000 respectively. The second stream goes to the top three driver pairings in the Pro Am category, who will receive RMB 60,000, RMB 40,000 and RMB 20,000 at the end of the season. In a similar vein, the top three driver pairings in the Am Am category will receive RMB 40,000, RMB 20,000 and RMB 10,000 respectively. The remaining 50% of the total prize fund will go to the top 10 teams based on championship points in their respective class – a type of revenue stream unique to Asian motorsports. For the Porsche GT3 Cup Trophy China, each point earned is equivalent to RMB 330 in monetary terms.
The opening round of the 2018 China GT Championship takes place at Zhuhai International Circuit on 12 May. For more information, please visit our website www.chinagt.net/en/ or follow us on facebook @ChinaGTChampionship.
